The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is asking for the public’s support as its team works to nurse an injured Belgian Malinois named Liberty back to health.
Liberty was one of three dogs brought to the RISPCA Wednesday afternoon after a chaotic scene unfolded in a Narragansett shopping plaza.
Investigators believe her former owner had been traveling with 14 dogs crammed into a small SUV on a trip from New York to Maine. The man reportedly pulled over after a fight broke out among the dogs.
“These are large dogs and it was a small SUV,” said RISPCA President Wayne Kezirian. “This person was literally covered in dogs.”
As soon as the car door opened, all 14 dogs escaped, with at least three running into the nearby Marshalls & HomeGoods store, according to the RISPCA.
Incredibly, the man managed to round up the animals and drive them to a nearby little league field, where he could safely unload them in an enclosed area.
Now, RISPCA staff are focused on Liberty’s recovery and ensuring the remaining dogs receive proper care. The organization is asking for donations and community support to help with medical treatment and rehabilitation.
