A Windsor police K9 officer named Timber was injured during the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker on Friday evening, May 23.
According to police, Timber suffered minor injuries after being bitten by the suspect’s dog during the arrest. The incident happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Glengarry Avenue and Wyandotte Street East in downtown Windsor.
Members of the Drugs and Guns Enforcement Unit (DIGS), along with other emergency services, were attempting to arrest a 36-year-old man following a drug investigation. Officers spotted the man walking his dog, but he ran when they approached.
K9 officer Timber helped catch the man. During the struggle, the suspect’s dog attacked Timber. Police said the officers quickly regained control and arrested the suspect.
During the arrest, officers found 56.2 grams of fentanyl and 11.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine. They later searched the man’s apartment in the 400 block of Glengarry Avenue, where they found two imitation guns and 193.9 grams of an unknown white powder. That powder is still being tested in a lab.
Police estimate the street value of the confirmed drugs at nearly $4,000.
The suspect is facing two charges for possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking.
