A dog was killed in a house fire on Thompson Road in North Syracuse on Memorial Day afternoon.
North Syracuse Fire Chief Pat Brennan said the fire department’s efforts were delayed because it took National Grid 45 minutes to respond and shut off the power to the home.
Brennan said 911 calls came in from a passerby and nearby residents who saw heavy smoke coming from the house. Firefighters could not begin fighting the fire right away because the power needed to be shut off for safety.
Two power lines at the front of the home were arcing and sparking, creating a serious electrical hazard. Fire crews feared the lines could fall at any moment.
“We’ll be following up with National Grid to find out why their response took so long,” Chief Brennan said. “We understand it was a holiday weekend, but when live wires are involved, that needs to be a priority.”
