Jock, a shelter rescue dog, has taught hundreds of school children about dog safety over the past 12 years.
This year, the council’s longest-serving education dog, a huntaway greyhound cross, will officially retire.
Jock was just a lively pup when he arrived at the Animal Shelter in 2014. When he was about one year old, he was adopted by Kym Manuel, the Council’s Animal Management Education Co-ordinator. Kym says adopting Jock was one of her best decisions.
“Jock has been an absolute legend,” Kym says. “He came to the shelter as a young dog and, at thirteen, has traveled the country giving presentations at schools, libraries, and public places.”
Jock was the original star of the Christchurch City Libraries Reading to Dogs program. He took part in Christchurch’s pilot session over ten years ago.
Today, Jock is one of five dogs teaching dog safety as part of the Christchurch City Council’s DogSmart and DogSafe education programs.
