Pumphouse Beach in Coldstream could temporarily become an off-leash dog park, depending on a vote by the District of Coldstream council tonight.
At the May 27 meeting, council members will consider a pilot project that would allow dogs on the beach between Kal Beach and the Rail Trail parking lot. The proposal would lift the current dog ban for one year, starting June 14, 2025, and running through June 14, 2026.
If approved, the District would install a dog waste bag dispenser, upgrade the garbage bin to a bear-proof container, and put up signs reminding pet owners to clean up after their dogs and to use the area at their own risk.
The staff report notes the cost of the project is expected to be minimal. However, it also warns that reversing the change after one year may be difficult.
“Once a new use has been conferred on a park, it is difficult to withdraw,” the report says. “If council opts to end the use at the end of the one-year pilot, substantial enforcement may be required to break habits.”
A community group called CARE for Kalamalka Lake Access is urging residents to attend the council meeting in support of the pilot. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at 9901 Kalamalka Road.
