Think twice before mistreating your pet dog. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has proposed major changes to the dog bylaws to stop pet abuse.
Under the new rules, the MC can take away any pet dog found to be ill-treated and put it up for adoption. This is one of the key changes in the draft bylaws.
For the first time, the MC plans to include penalties for dog bylaw violations in water and property tax bills. Currently, penalties are collected in cash.
The draft of the new dog bylaws has been finalized after the MC received public feedback. It will be discussed in the next general house meeting on May 30.
Officials said the response from residents was overwhelming. People submitted many suggestions to improve the management of both stray and pet dogs.
The draft bylaws have been updated to reflect these suggestions. The goal is to increase owners’ responsibility in caring for their pets and treating them like family members.
