As temperatures rise, Mesa County Animal Services is warning pet owners about the dangers of leaving pets inside parked cars.
“If a dog’s temperature goes above 103 degrees, it risks heat stroke,” said Animal Control Officer Jeffrey Hicks.
Hicks explained that a locked car can heat up very quickly.
“Depending on whether the windows are up, it can take less than 10 minutes for the inside of a car to reach over 100 degrees,” he said. He also noted that cracking the windows only helps if there is a breeze.
Pet owners are urged to never leave their animals unattended in vehicles during warm weather to keep them safe.
