Ashland County Dog Shelter Raises Fees to Improve Canine Healthcare

by Lisa

Ashland County commissioners approved fee increases for dog adoption, redemption, and housing starting July 1 to support enhanced healthcare services at the Ashland County Dog Shelter. The fee hike aims to fund critical testing and treatment for diseases like Lyme disease and heartworm.

Shannon Hamilton, the shelter’s kennel manager, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the dogs’ health, noting that healthier dogs have higher adoption rates. Currently, the shelter does not test dogs for Lyme disease, but recent cases—including one dog in critical condition—highlight the urgent need for early diagnosis and treatment.

The additional funds will cover Lyme disease test kits, enabling timely intervention with a four-week antibiotic course, as recommended by Cornell University’s veterinary experts.

In addition to the fee changes, the shelter will introduce Saturday operating hours starting in July to better serve the community and potential adopters.
