The Maine Department of Public Safety is mourning the sudden loss of Baxter, a 3-year-old chocolate Labrador who served as the state’s first official comfort dog.
Baxter was found dead around 2 p.m. on Wednesday inside a state vehicle parked at the Bangor Regional Communications Center. He had provided comfort and support to emergency responders across the state.
The department described Baxter as a valued companion who brought calm and connection to those working in high-stress situations. An investigation is likely to follow regarding the circumstances of his death.
