Rhett, a pit bull mix, is fighting for his life after being found severely neglected in an abandoned apartment in Clark Mills, New York.
On May 16, the Kirkland Police Department and local animal control officers discovered Rhett alone, starving, and too weak to stand. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, which is now handling the investigation, said in a Facebook post that Rhett was in critical condition when found.
“He was extremely emaciated, weak, and unable to get up on his own,” the post stated. Rhett was immediately taken to a local veterinarian for emergency care.
Clinton Pet Vet provided life-saving treatment after Rhett was rescued. He has since received a blood transfusion and is being treated for severe starvation, anemia, and a flea infestation. Rhett also spent time at Upstate Veterinary Specialties to stabilize his condition.
Rescuers say the dog was likely just “days from death” when he was found. His recovery is ongoing and uncertain, but he is receiving continued care under the watch of Kindred Spirits Greyhound Adoption Inc.
The organization has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Rhett’s growing medical expenses as he fights for a second chance at life.
