A bridge used daily by dog walkers at Jackie Parker Park in Mill Woods may soon be removed, after city officials deemed it unsafe.
Liz Moniz, who visits the off-leash dog park twice a day with her two dogs, calls the area “Disneyland for dogs.” She says the bridge adds to the sense of adventure.
“There are obstacles, there’s trees, there’s adventure, there’s basically rides — they go up a hill, they drop down, the water,” Moniz told.
However, the City of Edmonton says the bridge is not part of the city’s official infrastructure and was not built with city approval. Officials say they only recently became aware of it, even though local residents believe it has been there for years and may have been built by volunteers.
A recent inspection by city engineers found the bridge to be unsafe. It is now scheduled for removal next month.
“The structure is unpermitted and not listed in the city’s inventory of maintained assets,” the city said in a statement. “Its age is unknown, and there is no formal trail leading to it.”
The bridge sits on city property but crosses Mill Creek, which is provincial Crown land.
For now, dog park visitors are being asked to stay off the bridge until it is removed for safety reasons.
