Animal welfare advocates in Arizona’s West Valley are raising alarms over a growing crisis of dog abandonment. Residents have reported a marked increase in sightings of stray and dumped dogs, with local shelters overwhelmed by calls.
Tammy Johnson, who operates a small shelter in the region, said, “We’re getting a lot of calls, sightings with packs of dogs, lost dogs, dumped dogs, stray dogs.” She emphasized the heartbreaking conditions many animals are found in.
Johnson pointed to rising pet care costs as a likely factor behind the spike, suggesting that economic hardship is forcing some pet owners to make difficult decisions.
