Days after the Delhi High Court urged authorities to consider a comprehensive policy for the rehabilitation of stray dogs, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said the government is working on a long-term solution to address the growing concern.
Gupta made the remarks while inaugurating development work in Pitampura, part of her Shalimar Bagh constituency, where an elderly resident voiced concern about the menace of stray dogs.
“I am working on solving the problems due to stray dogs. The issues involve both the people as well as the speechless animals,” Gupta said. “The Delhi government is creating a platform to bring together the residents as well as those who care for these animals.”
She emphasized that under existing law, stray dogs cannot be forcibly relocated or kept in shelters, as they are protected in the areas they inhabit. “The government is searching for a long-term solution in which neither people nor animals are discomforted. It will be a policy matter which is work in progress,” she added.
The Delhi High Court’s recommendation came from Justice Mini Pushkarna, who is presiding over a petition filed in 2023 by Pratima Devi, an elderly woman affectionately known as “Dog Amma” for her lifelong care of stray animals.
In an order dated May 21, Justice Pushkarna noted that there had been regular reports of stray dog attacks in Delhi and emphasized the need for systemic intervention. The matter is scheduled for its next hearing on August 6.
