The St. Joseph County Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished members, Sheriff Bruno, a beloved comfort dog who passed away following a sudden cancer diagnosis.
According to the department, Bruno was diagnosed just yesterday with an aggressive form of cancer that had spread quietly throughout his body. By the following morning, his condition had rapidly declined, and his handlers were forced to make the difficult decision to say goodbye.
Bruno passed away peacefully in the arms of his handler and best friend, Special Deputy Joe Hamer.
Bruno joined the department in 2019 as a comfort dog and quickly became a local favorite. He made frequent appearances at schools, community parades, memorial services, and other public events. Known for his gentle spirit and loyalty, Bruno was more than a companion—he was an officer, a friend, and a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
