Violet Cooper, 38, of Dilton Marsh, Westbury, was found guilty at Salisbury Magistrates Court, for failing to update her dog’s ownership details on the microchip database within the legally required 21 days.
She was fined £220, ordered to pay £539.59 in costs to Wiltshire Council, and given an £88 victim surcharge.
The case arose from an incident in August 2024, when a Chow Chow-type dog was found roaming in Penleigh, Westbury. A member of the public took the dog, which wore a pink collar but had no owner identification, to a local veterinary practice.
While a microchip was detected, it was not registered in any approved ownership databases. Consequently, Wiltshire Council’s Dog Warden team was contacted, and the dog was classified as a stray.
