An 11-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog named Rain has made a remarkable recovery after battling a life-threatening case of tetanus.
Rain was rushed to Davies Veterinary Specialists in Hertfordshire after showing alarming symptoms of the rare condition, which is caused by toxins from infected wounds and targets the nervous system, leading to severe muscle spasms and stiffness.
Danielle Eldridge, Rain’s owner from High Wycombe, described the terrifying ordeal. “It started with a limp in her right forelimb,” she said. “Then she struggled to eat because she couldn’t open her mouth properly. Her jaw would lock shut, catching her lips and tongue, and she had constant muscle twitches in her head and jaw.”
Rain’s condition deteriorated quickly—she sustained multiple injuries and eventually lost the ability to walk.
Thanks to expert emergency care and intensive treatment, Rain pulled through and is now well on the road to recovery.
