After a five-year gap, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is preparing to roll out a large-scale campaign to vaccinate and sterilise more than 1.80 lakh stray dogs across all 200 city divisions.
This renewed effort follows a sharp increase in public complaints and incidents involving stray dog attacks, which have raised serious safety concerns among residents.
The last major sterilisation and vaccination drive was conducted in 2020. Since then, the GCC has faced growing criticism for its failure to control the stray dog population and adequately address related public health and safety issues.
Officials say the upcoming campaign aims to reduce the stray dog population humanely while curbing the risk of rabies and improving urban safety.
