Trapped in a sewer drain beneath the Amazon Fulfillment Facility in north Lubbock, a frightened dog had nowhere to go—until a coordinated rescue mission brought him back to safety.
Nick Wilson, Assistant Fire Chief with Lubbock Fire Rescue, said teams from Lubbock Animal Services, the city’s Public Works Department, and facility employees worked together to develop a plan to save the dog.
“That was everybody’s focus from the get-go—to make sure we got that dog out alive and healthy,” Wilson said. “It’s certainly not something we deal with every day, thankfully, but whether it’s people or animals, it’s something we train for.”
Once the dog was brought above ground, the crowd—firefighters, Amazon employees, and city workers—burst into cheers. “We may have been happier than the dog was,” Wilson joked.
Jessica Smith, Field Supervisor with Lubbock Animal Services, said the dog has been named ‘Prime’, fittingly after the facility where he was found. While he is healthy, Prime remains shy and overwhelmed by his new shelter surroundings.
“He’s a nice dog. Very gentle,” Smith said. “He’s still scared, of course, but he’s not aggressive. You can approach him and leash him without a problem.”
Smith believes Prime’s rescue was only possible because someone made the call. She encourages the public to never hesitate to report animals in danger.
