A poodle mix named Kimber is now safe and receiving critical care after enduring a horrifying act of cruelty that led to felony and misdemeanor charges against her owner.
Stephen Stoltzfus of Kirkwood, Lancaster County, has been arrested following an investigation by Lancaster County Detectives, the Pennsylvania SPCA, and the Pennsylvania State Police. Authorities allege that Stoltzfus used scissors to amputate his dog’s injured hind leg rather than seek veterinary care.
The investigation began after the SPCA received a report that a dog had been injured by farm equipment. While the owner allegedly requested pain medication, he refused to pursue professional medical treatment. Instead, he reportedly performed a makeshift amputation himself.
When rescuers found Kimber, she was barely alive. Her condition was dire—her infected leg had exposed bone, and her fur was matted with dried blood. Fleas and ticks covered her skin, and the odor of infection was overwhelming, according to Main Line Animal Rescue.
“Yet somehow, despite the agony, Kimber still trusted us,” the rescue group shared, commending her gentle demeanor.
Stoltzfus now faces serious animal cruelty charges, and Kimber is on the path to healing in the care of professionals.
