“We need another zero,” said Patricia M. Herlihy, half-joking, as she pointed to the $50 fine currently imposed on dog-walkers who let their pets roam off-leash on Falmouth’s beaches.
From May 1 to October 1, dogs are strictly prohibited from the town’s public beaches. In the off-season, while dogs are allowed, they must be kept on a leash at all times.
With concerns growing about compliance, town officials and residents like Herlihy are beginning to suggest that steeper fines might be necessary to encourage responsible pet ownership and protect public spaces for all.
