The Houston SPCA has confirmed that a dog found dead on an apartment balcony in west Houston on May 22 died from heat distress.
According to medical officials, a necropsy revealed the dog had no access to shade, food, or water. The animal was found by the Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigations team and Harris County Constable Precinct 1.
A digital thermometer at the scene showed temperatures above 108°F, indicating the extreme heat the dog was exposed to before dying.
“This heartbreaking case of animal cruelty is a painful reminder that heat can be deadly for pets in a short amount of time,” said Dr. Roberta Westbrook, Chief Veterinarian and Vice President of Veterinary Medicine at the Houston SPCA. “It was entirely preventable.”
