A dog rescuer in Thane has been hit with a staggering ₹5.5 lakh fine by his housing society for walking his rescue dogs—an act he says is being unfairly penalized. Subhajit Bhattacharya, who runs the ‘Shades Of Kindness Foundation’, received a May maintenance bill of ₹5.71 lakh, including miscellaneous charges totaling ₹5.14 lakh, attributed solely to walking his dogs.
Bhattacharya resides at the Hawaiian Village Co-Op Housing Society on Ghodbunder Road, where he cares for 20 dogs, many of them paraplegic. While the society passed a resolution banning him from walking his dogs, Bhattacharya claims the enforcement is discriminatory and driven by a “dog-hating” member of the managing committee.
“This is harassment. I’ve rescued and cared for animals for over 15 years, but ever since I moved here a year and a half ago, it’s been constant targeting,” he said.
Despite the ban applying only to him, Bhattacharya continues his animal welfare efforts and is preparing to challenge the society’s actions. The incident has sparked concern among animal rights advocates over the increasing hostility faced by pet owners and rescuers in urban residential complexes.
