A Tennessee nonprofit is working to give a paralyzed dog a fresh start after rescuing him from a neglected home in Rhea County.
Last month, Amy Thran of the Flying Pigs Sanctuary responded to a tip from a local deputy about possible animal neglect. When she arrived at the rundown property, she found over a dozen dogs, including several puppies hiding beneath the house.
As Thran crawled under the home to reach the puppies, she was followed by one dog in particularly bad condition. Despite being unable to walk, the dog crawled beside her every time she went under.
“After crawling back under the house not once, not twice, but he went with me three times,” Thran told 6 News. “I swear he was just like, ‘Don’t leave me here.’”
The dog’s back legs didn’t work. He was severely underweight, covered in fleas, and had open sores on his feet from dragging himself on the ground. Thran gently wrapped him in a blanket and gave him a new name: Burrito.
“I’ll never forget him looking at me and saying, ‘Don’t leave me here,’” she said. “I had a dog bed in my truck and I literally rolled him up like a burrito—that’s where the name came from.”
Burrito is now in the care of Flying Pigs Sanctuary, where staff are working to improve his health and quality of life.
