The RSPCA has launched an appeal to find the owner of an elderly dog abandoned in South Yorkshire.
The dog, suffering from fur loss and severe dental disease, was found at the side of Hickleton Road in Barnburgh on Thursday, May 29, around 7:30 p.m. He was taken to a vet in Thurnscoe for care.
The vets discovered the dog had been seriously neglected. He suffered from cherry eye in both eyes and muscle wasting in his back legs, making him unstable and causing him to collapse after standing briefly.
Despite efforts to ease his pain, the dog was put to sleep the next day to end his suffering. The dog was not microchipped.
Due to concerns about his neglect, the vets reported the case to the RSPCA.
Inspector Ben Cottle-Shaw, leading the investigation, said, “He was such a loving and friendly dog, and the vet staff really cared for him. It is heartbreaking to think he was once a loved pet but was abandoned when he needed help the most.”
