City of Albany rangers are appealing for public assistance following a violent dog attack in Spencer Park last month, where a small Maltese Shih Tzu was mauled three times in just 15 minutes.
The attacks occurred between 5:45 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on May 22 across Hardie Road, Dickson and Lindfield Streets, and Lindfield Crescent. The Maltese, which was being walked on a leash by its owner, was first attacked on Hardie Road by an unrestrained brindle-brown American Staffordshire-type dog accompanied by a man riding a bicycle.
The larger dog continued to attack the smaller dog two more times on nearby streets. A City of Albany spokesperson confirmed the Maltese survived but sustained multiple injuries.
City ranger coordinator Carl Fjastad emphasized the seriousness of such incidents, stating that dog owners could face prosecution for failing to properly control their pets.
“Many of these sad and unfortunate incidents can be avoided if dog owners take proper responsibility for their animals,” Fjastad said. “Simple actions like securing fences or using a leash in public can make a big difference.”
