The city of Long Beach has seen a decrease in dog bite incidents involving mail carriers, dropping from 19 attacks in 2023 to 14 in 2024. Despite this improvement, Long Beach still ranks among the top 20 cities nationwide for dog-related mail carrier incidents.
Postmaster Raymond “Ray” Lemos and his team are raising awareness by sharing effective safety tips that have contributed to the decline. They emphasize the importance of community involvement to protect mail carriers as they go about their daily deliveries.
In an interview, Lemos and several mail carriers who have experienced dog attacks discussed how these incidents impact their work and family lives. Their stories highlight the need for ongoing education and cooperation between pet owners and the community.
