Hartford Students Help Design New Home for Dog Star Rescue

by Lisa

Architecture design students from A.I. Prince Technical High School in Hartford are putting their creative skills to compassionate use through a unique partnership with Dog Star Rescue, a nonprofit based in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

Together, they’re working to bring to life an 8,000-square-foot facility that will triple the size of Dog Star Rescue’s current operations. The expansion will offer more kennel space, improved HVAC systems, a pet pantry, and additional resources to better serve rescued animals.

“We’re going to have more kennels, more top-of-the-line HVAC systems, more pet pantries, and tons of different opportunities,” said Nichole Fortenbaugh, the rescue’s executive director.

Students from Prince Tech contributed by creating digital renderings of the blueprints for the new building. Architecture instructor Nick DellaCamera said the designs were already drafted, but the students helped visualize them.

“The design was there; we had to do renderings to bring it to life,” DellaCamera said. “We really wanted to showcase what this build will be and the greatness it will provide for all the dogs and the community.”

For students like Tamajje Jones, a junior, the project offered an exciting and meaningful real-world experience. “It’s amazing to know our work will actually help dogs and be part of something lasting,” he shared.

The facility marks a major step forward for Dog Star Rescue — and an inspiring example of how education and animal welfare can work hand in paw.
