Stray Dog Menace Sparks Fear and Tragedy in Kashmir’s Baighpora Villages

by Lisa

Residents of Baighpora and nearby villages in Awantipora, Pulwama district, are living in constant fear due to a sharp rise in stray dog attacks that have resulted in serious injuries and even the death of a child in the past two years.

Locals say the stray dog population has increased alarmingly, reportedly fueled by the transportation of dogs from urban areas during night hours, leading to packs roaming freely through the villages.

“The situation is dire. Children can no longer walk to school safely, and villagers avoid their farmlands fearing attacks,” said Nadeem Ahmad, a local resident. “Movement in the early mornings and late evenings has become hazardous.”

Many residents, including Nelofar Akhter, expressed deep concern about the safety of children and the elderly. “Elders have to accompany children to school now. Even the elderly are scared to tend to their farmlands due to recent dog attacks,” she said.

Despite repeated appeals to local authorities, including the MLA and Deputy Commissioner, villagers say no significant action has been taken to address the issue.

“We have informed the officials many times but have seen no concrete steps yet,” the residents lamented.

They are calling for an urgent investigation into the sudden rise in the stray dog population and immediate measures to control it to prevent further tragedies.

“We urge the administration to act swiftly to protect lives and restore peace in our community,” the villagers appealed.
