A pack of stray dogs attacked people across several areas in Munnar town on Sunday morning, injuring 20 individuals, including local residents and tourists.
The attacks occurred around 11 a.m. in multiple locations, such as Periavara Stand, Munnar Colony, and Rajamala. The dogs chased and bit people indiscriminately, affecting tourists from Tamil Nadu and Ernakulam, shopkeepers, and local residents.
All those injured were taken to Adimali Taluk Hospital for treatment. Among the victims are Shaktivel (42) from Munnar; Selvamatha (51), Babu (34), Sindhu (51), and Priya Joby (45) from Devikulam; Thyagarajan (36) from Chennai; Skaria (68) and Archana (13) from Bison Valley; Vineeth (46) from Palakkad; Anju (32) from Paravoor; Karuppuswamy (36) from Periyavara; and Raihan Shameer (17) from Changanassery.
Despite repeated complaints from residents about the growing stray dog population, the local panchayat and authorities have taken no visible action to address the problem. Residents blame poor waste management in public areas for attracting and sustaining the stray dog population.
Several tourists who were bitten expressed frustration over the lack of adequate medical facilities in Munnar. They had to travel nearly 30 kilometers to Adimali for treatment. They have called on the government and health officials to ensure emergency medical services are available locally, as Munnar remains one of the district’s most important tourist destinations.
