The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is investigating a case involving 17 dogs that escaped from a vehicle in a Narragansett shopping plaza on Wednesday.
According to RISPCA President Wayne Kezirian, a man and a woman were traveling from New York to Maine with 17 Belgian Malinois dogs split between two vehicles.
The situation escalated when the man, who was transporting 14 of the dogs in a small SUV, stopped in the parking lot on Point Judith Road to separate the animals after a fight broke out inside the vehicle.
“It was an absolutely untenable and difficult situation,” Kezirian told. “These are large dogs and it was a small SUV. This person was literally covered in dogs.”
The woman driving a second vehicle reportedly had three of the dogs and maintained much better control, according to Kezirian.
The RISPCA is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the transport and welfare of the animals.
