An investigation is underway after a dog died in a house fire in Columbus Thursday morning, officials confirmed.
The Columbus Fire Department responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. to a report of a fire at a home on W614 Fox Road in the Town of Columbus.
When firefighters arrived, flames were visible coming from the front and left side of the house. All residents were already outside and informed firefighters that a dog was inside a downstairs bedroom.
Firefighters entered the home and found the dog in the first-floor living room. They brought the dog outside and attempted to save it, but the dog died from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The house was deemed unlivable after the blaze. One person was inside the home when the fire started and received treatment at the scene.
Several local agencies assisted the Columbus Fire Department in extinguishing the fire, including police and fire departments from Columbia County and nearby towns such as Fall River, Sun Prairie, and Madison.
