Gunny, an English Bulldog deeply loved by her owner David Ketcham, a Marine veteran, recently showed she could live up to the Marine Corps nickname “Devil Dog.” Ketcham, who has a tattoo of Gunny on his arm, was worried when the dog went missing.
Gunny disappeared from the Ketcham family’s remote Cripple Creek home on May 3. Just two days before, she had surgery on her mouth. The family feared for her safety after a strong spring storm swept through Southern Colorado. They also spotted a bear nearby, making the situation even more worrying.
Hope arrived unexpectedly when Survival University, a group that teaches survival skills, found Gunny. According to their Facebook page, the university offers courses from basic to advanced survival training. Owner Jason Marsteiner told KRDO13 that the dog showed up during a class while the group was having dinner around a campfire.
“I was quite surprised,” Marsteiner said. “She’s a survivor and found a group of people with the same energy as her.”
Marsteiner also mentioned that his group had seen a mountain lion in the area about a week earlier. Given these dangers, it’s truly a miracle that Gunny survived.
