Amber, a five-year-old golden retriever mix, disappeared after just one night with her foster family in Bramshaw, a small village in Hampshire, England. Before that, Amber was rescued as a stray puppy from the streets of Qatar and brought to the U.K. by a charity.
After Amber went missing, people spotted her many times in the nearby New Forest National Park. Food stations and cameras were set up to track her, but despite over 60 sightings, she stayed free.
Amber reportedly moved southwest through the forest toward the coast. She then swam about a mile across Poole Harbour to Brownsea Island. On the island, a local resident left food out for her for four days.
When Amber tried to swim back to the mainland, a ferry crew spotted her struggling in the water and rescued her. At first, they thought she was a seal.
Kelly Parker, who helped bring Amber to the U.K., said Amber had entered a “wild mindset” during her time missing.
Since her rescue, Amber has been settling back into her foster home. She has received a clean bill of health from the vet and will be available for adoption once she is fully settled.
“She lost a lot of weight, so now she’s eating well and getting lots of love,” Collins added.
