Visitors to Tilgate Park in Crawley are being invited to share their views on the rules requiring dogs to be kept on leads in certain areas of the park.
Since 2022, a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) has been in effect, requiring dogs to be on a lead around Tilgate Lake, the main lawn, the peace garden, and the golf course—except for the perimeter path.
Crawley Borough Council plans to renew this order for another three years and wants public feedback before it expires later this year.
Cabinet member for public protection, Yasmin Khan, said the rules help keep the park safe for everyone. She noted that since the PSPO began, dog attacks have dropped sharply, and there have been no reported deaths of wildlife such as swans, cygnets, or deer.
Assistance dogs are exempt from the lead rule, and dogs may roam off-lead in other parts of the park. However, dogs are not allowed at all in the children’s playground.
Anyone not following the rules can be asked to comply, and council officers may issue fines. If the fines are not paid, offenders can face court prosecution.
The council encourages residents and visitors to respond to the consultation, which remains open until June 19.
