A 44-year-old woman from Sagthala village in Kheralu taluka died recently after developing rabies symptoms nearly two months following a scratch from a stray puppy.
The woman had sustained a minor scratch from a female dog’s puppy about two months ago. She initially experienced stiffness in the scratched hand, which gradually spread, causing paralysis-like symptoms.
At Lions Hospital in Mehsana, neurologist Dr. Jay Chaudhary first suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. However, after learning about the puppy scratch, doctors suspected rabies and sent blood and tissue samples to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation.
Despite treatment, the woman’s condition worsened, and she passed away on May 21 with full rabies symptoms.
