Visitors to Taizhou Zoo in China were disappointed and angry after discovering that the pandas they came to see were not real. Instead, the zoo displayed Chow Chow dogs dyed to look like the rare and beloved panda bears.
From May 1 to May 5, tens of thousands of visitors lined up to see these “panda dogs,” which had black ears, limbs, and dark circles painted around their eyes. Despite the paint, the dogs’ canine features were still obvious.
Videos shared by visitors showed the dogs, but many complained they were misled into thinking they would see real pandas. The incident sparked widespread criticism of the zoo for deceiving the public.
Although the dyed dogs looked cute, the controversy raises questions about honesty and animal welfare at Taizhou Zoo.
