Three pit bull mix dogs were rescued from a rental home in the 700 block of Fairview Avenue after neighbors reported hearing animals in distress.
Alton Animal Control officers responded to the house, which had no electricity, and found two severely malnourished and dehydrated dogs. The animals were immediately removed from the property.
Veteran animal control officer Steve Bosaw said the dogs were in extremely poor condition. “On a scale from one to nine, with nine being healthy, these dogs were a one and a two,” he said.
About an hour after the initial rescue, neighbors again reported hearing another dog crying inside the same home. Animal control officers returned with police and contacted the landlord to gain access. No one was home at the time.
Due to a reported flea infestation, officers sprayed their feet and ankles with insect repellent containing DEET before entering. Although prepared with a snare, it wasn’t needed. The third dog, also a pit bull mix, was found weak and emaciated. Officers carried it to the animal control vehicle, where it was unable to stand in the cage.
“This one might not make it,” Bosaw said, highlighting the dog’s critical condition.
Authorities have not yet announced any charges, and the incident remains under investigation.
