A Doberman named Rey, who had been struggling after losing one of his front legs to cancer, has experienced a remarkable transformation thanks to the innovative use of 3D printing technology.
Rey, a four-year-old dog from Boston, Massachusetts, had a perfect life with his family. He was a beloved companion, always following someone around and keeping close to his family members, especially in the kitchen. However, in early December, Rey began limping, and after a series of tests, it was revealed that he had osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The diagnosis led to the difficult decision to amputate his affected leg.
After the surgery, Rey experienced emotional and physical challenges. His owner shared that Rey would cry and whine constantly due to the pain and inability to play or go for walks. This left him sad and disconnected from his usual activities.
Determined to improve Rey’s quality of life, his owners turned to 3DPets, a company specializing in pet mobility devices using 3D printing. The company faced a unique challenge due to Rey’s large size and the fact that dogs carry most of their weight on their front limbs. With support from 3D printer company Elegoo, who covered the costs of the prosthetic, Rey was fitted with a custom-designed prosthetic leg.
Today, Rey is back to enjoying life. He runs around, plays fetch, and once again becomes the focal point of his family. His owner noted, “He’s still a ham,” expressing how happy they were to see him return to his old, playful self.
Rey’s prosthetic, which requires some maintenance, has given him a new lease on life, allowing him to continue being the happy, active dog he was before his surgery. The transformation not only improved Rey’s physical mobility but also restored his spirit and place in the heart of his family.
