Sunderland dog owners are being reminded of upcoming restrictions that will limit beach access for pets. The ban, which will be in effect from May 1 to September 30, applies to Roker beach and a section of Seaburn beach.
The restrictions, part of the city’s Public Spaces Protection Order introduced in 2019, were renewed last year after a public consultation. Under the new rules, dog owners caught violating the exclusion zones could face a fixed penalty of £100, escalating to £1,000 if the matter goes to court.
Councillor Lindsey Leonard, who oversees environment, transport, and net zero, emphasized the importance of maintaining the beaches for all visitors. She acknowledged that while most dog owners follow the rules, there were still instances of non-compliance, with 21 fines issued in 2024 alone.
The council continues to focus on ensuring that the beaches remain accessible and enjoyable for everyone, urging pet owners to respect the established boundaries during the summer months.
