The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) and South Kingstown Animal Control have taken custody of nine Belgian Malinois dogs after a dog attack occurred in Narragansett on Wednesday morning.
At approximately 11 a.m., RISPCA was called to assist with a report of animals running loose in the parking lot of a Marshall’s store. Upon arrival, RISPCA President and General Agent Wayne Kazarian found 14 large, “anxious and rambunctious” dogs inside a white family-sized SUV.
The vehicle’s owner, traveling from New York to Maine with the intent to sell the dogs, agreed to surrender some but not all of the animals. During the drive, some dogs began fighting, which prompted the owner to stop at the Marshall’s parking lot.
RISPCA attempted to safely transfer the dogs to an enclosed baseball field, instructing the owner to remove the dogs one by one for examination and control. However, when the door opened, all the dogs escaped the vehicle, leading to a fight during which one dog was attacked.
As a result, nine of the dogs were taken into custody by RISPCA and animal control for their safety and further care.
