Following the tragic death of an infant caused by a Rottweiler, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proposed strict new rules for pet dog ownership. The draft regulations aim to increase safety and accountability for dog owners in the city, introducing the toughest guidelines to date.
The proposed rules clearly place full responsibility on pet owners for any damage, injury, or loss caused by their dogs. According to the draft, owners must compensate victims if their dog bites someone or causes harm to a person or their property. AMC has made it clear that it will not be held liable in such incidents.
These new guidelines apply to pet dogs only and do not cover community (stray) dogs.
To improve public safety, the draft states that dogs must be kept under control at all times to prevent them from threatening, annoying, or injuring people. Any dog taken outside must be on a leash or chain. For more aggressive breeds, the rules require muzzles and that the person walking the dog carry a stick.
Another major focus of the proposed rules is cleanliness. Owners will be required to clean up after their pets in public areas to maintain hygiene.
AMC officials say these new regulations are aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership while ensuring public safety in shared spaces.
