A 2-year-old pitbull mix, Miss Scarlet, who was shot in the head in March, has found her forever home with Tim and Julia Gottschalk of Bellevue, Ky. The story of her survival and recovery is nothing short of miraculous.
Miss Scarlet was shot after escaping from her chain in Lincoln Heights and wandering into a neighbor’s yard. Despite the bullet traveling through her head, shoulder, and chest, she survived thanks to the quick intervention of Natalie Lotspeich, a volunteer with SPCA Cincinnati and owner of Dog Depot grooming salon. Lotspeich took Miss Scarlet to Care Center Cincinnati for emergency care, where she began a remarkable recovery.
When SPCA Cincinnati sought foster homes for Miss Scarlet, the Gottschalks, who already had a cat named Chloe, responded. Julia said, “I knew right away,” recognizing that Miss Scarlet was easy to love.
SPCA Cincinnati CEO Chris Seelbach referred to the Gottschalks’ decision to adopt Miss Scarlet as a “foster fail,” but Tim and Julia were more than happy with the outcome. Miss Scarlet officially joined their family on Monday, where she will continue to heal and enjoy her new life.
“We failed and we’re happy with that,” Tim shared, with the couple now proudly embracing their role as her forever family.
