A malnourished dog, found two weeks ago wandering the streets of Somerton, is making remarkable strides toward recovery thanks to the efforts of the Humane Society of Yuma.
Animal control discovered the dog, named Billie, in a severely emaciated condition. Upon arrival at the humane society, medical staff found she weighed only 25 pounds — less than half the healthy weight for a dog of her size.
Anette Lagunas, director of the Humane Society of Yuma, explained the team is carefully monitoring Billie’s progress to determine her specific dietary needs. “We’re working really hard to figure out what she needs from us,” Lagunas said. “Is it dry food? Canned food? More frequent meals? We’re doing our best to meet her needs.”
The shelter is committed to supporting Billie through her recovery, planning to keep her for a few more days until she gains sufficient weight to resume a normal diet and find a loving home. “When we place dogs in new homes, we want to set those families up for success,” Lagunas added. “The best way to do that is by making sure they’re healthy.”
Though Billie still has a long way to go, the shelter reports that she is already showing signs of improvement. She’s steadily gaining weight and appears to be more energetic and happier with each passing day.
Billie’s rescue is just one of many success stories at the Humane Society of Yuma. To help provide care for animals in need like Billie, donations can be made to Roobee’s Cruelty Fund and Denver’s Medical Fund.
