More than 100 dogs are recovering after being rescued from a puppy mill in Raleigh.
Raleigh Animal Control responded to a home in southeast Raleigh on Wednesday following a complaint about poor living conditions. During the investigation, officers found many dogs living in dirty and unsafe spaces.
The SPCA of Wake County reported that Wake County Animal Services and Raleigh Animal Control were at the property. The homeowner cooperated and surrendered 21 chickens and 101 dogs.
Dr. Jennifer Federico from the Wake County Animal Center said all 101 dogs were removed and placed with rescue groups.
Among the dogs rescued, the SPCA of Wake County said there were 15 dogs and puppies, including a mother dog with two newborn puppies, some larger puppies, as well as adult and senior dogs.
Kira Krotboth from Pips Rescue described the conditions: “These dogs did not have a blanket until last night, or a toy. They were covered in their own waste.”
Most of the dogs were small breeds like toy poodles, pomeranians, chihuahuas, and yorkies. The rescuers also found a golden retriever caged in the back of the house next to a cage filled with goldendoodle puppies.
All the animals have been placed with rescue groups and will require time and care to recover. Some of the organizations helping include Carolina Poodle Rescue (55 dogs), Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital (13 dogs), SPCA of Wake County (17 dogs), and Perfectly Imperfect Pups (8 dogs).
Krotboth said the rescue was very busy, with many people in animal control uniforms, crates lined up, and dogs being carried out wrapped in blankets covered in filth.
