In an incredible display of compassion and lifesaving teamwork, a therapy dog named Olivia has helped save the life of a 5-month-old puppy, Jaxon, who was likely poisoned by rodenticide. The heartwarming incident occurred at DoveLewis in Portland, Oregon, where Jaxon was brought in showing signs of lethargy, abnormal bleeding, and pale gums. The puppy was diagnosed with coagulopathy, a condition that interferes with blood clotting and was likely caused by poisoning.
As Jaxon’s condition worsened, the veterinarians quickly realized that he needed a blood transfusion to survive. Just as the hospital was preparing for this critical step, Olivia, a therapy dog and regular blood donor at DoveLewis, arrived for one of her routine donations. It turned out that Olivia was a perfect match for Jaxon’s blood type, and after completing her donation, her blood was rushed to the puppy.
Thanks to Olivia’s generosity, Jaxon’s vitals started to stabilize, and he began recovering from the poisoning. This was Olivia’s 16th time donating blood, a testament to her dedication and the importance of regular blood donations from healthy dogs to help others in need. Olivia’s owner, Grace Epstein, emphasized how “easy and fun” blood donations are for Olivia, and how crucial they are for the recovery of sick and injured animals.
This remarkable story highlights not only the incredible bond between animals but also the essential role of therapy dogs in saving lives. Olivia’s selfless donation helped give Jaxon a second chance at life, and she continues to inspire others to consider becoming regular blood donors for pets in need.
