Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, supports recent changes in the Housing (Scotland) Bill but wants the Scottish Government to go further to help renters with pets.
The charity says many renters still face big challenges finding pet-friendly homes. In fact, about 15% of Dogs Trust’s rehoming enquiries in Scotland are because owners cannot find suitable accommodation for their dogs.
Last year, Dogs Trust rehomed over 600 dogs in Scotland. It welcomes the Bill’s new rules allowing tenants in private and social housing to ask for permission to keep pets without landlords unreasonably refusing. The Bill also requires landlords to respond to such requests within a set time.
Dogs Trust especially appreciates that Scottish law protects social housing tenants better than the UK government’s Renters Rights Bill.
However, the charity wants even stronger protections and clearer guidance. It is encouraging dog owners and supporters to contact their Members of the Scottish Parliament and ask them to support amendments that better protect renters with pets.
