Dog hoarding is increasing in rural Southern Oregon’s Lake County. This month alone, 14 dogs were taken from one location. Authorities believe there could be 100 more dogs in similar situations soon.
The problem has caught the attention of people in Central Oregon, who are stepping up to help.
“Oh, my God! It just broke my heart,” said Elena Chadwick.
When Chadwick saw pictures of starving dogs in a remote area, she felt a strong need to act.
“She sent me pictures, and I started crying,” Chadwick said.
Chadwick works at Sunriver Veterinary Clinic. She drove hundreds of miles to help rescue the 14 dogs and make sure they received care.
She teamed up with Kathy and Becky, a mother and daughter who run the Humane Society of North Lake County.
Kathy shared, “This last man was a veteran. He was actually feeding his food to the dogs.” She added that the trailer where he lived was “just a shack—no water, no power, no sanitation.”
With help from the local sheriff’s office, the dogs were taken from the site. Five of them were brought to Central Oregon for adoption.
One of the puppies, needing extra care in a warm home, has already found a new family.
