Dog owners in Vancouver’s Fairview neighborhood have a new reason to celebrate. A brand-new fenced-in off-leash area officially opened this weekend at Heather Park, offering 1,200 square meters of dog-friendly space at Heather Street and West 18th Avenue, just south of Vancouver General Hospital.
The woodchip-covered park includes agility features like ramps, stepping stones, and hurdles to help keep dogs active and engaged. For their humans, there are several benches to relax on while supervising their pets.
A few basic rules apply: owners must pick up after their dogs, keep them within sight, prevent aggressive behavior, and avoid digging. Dogs must also be leashed near the area, outside the designated off-leash zone.
The project was shaped by strong community input, with over 1,300 residents participating in two rounds of public consultation, according to the Vancouver Park Board. The new space is aimed at addressing the shortage of dog-friendly areas in both Fairview and Mount Pleasant.
This is just the beginning of a broader dog-friendly expansion: two more projects are expected later this year — a new off-leash zone in Granville Park and an expanded and renewed Emery Barnes Park off-leash area in Downtown Vancouver.
