Dog Owner Shares Crucial Tip to Avoid Expensive Vet Bills

by Lisa

A Buckinghamshire dog owner has shared an invaluable tip to help pet parents avoid expensive vet bills after her rescue dog fell severely ill during a night out.

Hayley Finch, from Wendover, had just begun celebrating her 40th birthday with her husband, Peter, when their beloved dog Evelyn became seriously unwell. The couple, who had entrusted Evelyn to a trusted sitter, were dining at a local restaurant when they received an alarming call—Evelyn had suddenly started vomiting blood.

“I was terrified,” said Hayley. “We had barely sat down to eat when the call came in. I thought she was dying.”

The couple rushed home to find Evelyn coughing up blood, which Hayley described as “absolutely horrific” and “heart-stopping.” The dog sitter acted quickly, seeking help from an emergency vet, where Evelyn was treated with an anti-sickness injection and probiotics.

Though relieved by the care Evelyn received, the Finches were shocked by the hefty bill for the out-of-hours treatment. “It was incredibly stressful,” said Peter, 55. “The care was amazing, but the cost was a massive, unexpected hit.”

Determined to prevent such a stressful experience in the future, the Finches now keep a probiotic paste by Nature’s Pet in their cupboard. According to Hayley, it has been a game-changer for managing minor stomach issues with their dogs before they escalate into emergencies. “Having the probiotic paste at home has saved us from another vet visit,” Hayley explained. “It works like a charm and stops stomach upsets in their tracks.”

Thankfully, Evelyn has fully recovered and is back to her usual, happy self. The experience, however, has had a lasting effect on the couple. “She’s not just a dog, she’s a beloved member of the family,” Hayley reflected. “It was terrifying to see her so sick, but knowing she would be okay made all the difference.”
