Grieving Son’s Dog Walking Venture Earns National Award Recognition

by Lisa

Nathan Jennings, who turned personal tragedy into a business dedicated to pets, has been named a finalist in the prestigious Animal Star Awards 2025.

The 32-year-old from Bury founded Rupert’s Mates, a dog walking and pet sitting service, after losing both of his parents within six months. Battling grief and struggling to cope, Nathan found purpose and healing by building a business around his love for animals.

Now, less than a year since launching Rupert’s Mates in January, Nathan’s efforts have been recognised as he secures a finalist spot in the Best Pet Related Business category of the national awards.

“It’s a real honour to be recognised among so many brilliant pet professionals,” Nathan shared. “This isn’t just about me — it’s about the clients, their pets, and everyone who’s supported me through the hard times. Their encouragement has made this possible.”

The inspiration behind Rupert’s Mates was Rupert, a unique Chow Chow and Cavachon cross that Nathan and his partner, Jodie Sykes, welcomed into their family. Seeking to create a “new kind of family bond” after his parents’ passing, Rupert not only brought companionship but also sparked the idea for the business.

Rupert’s Mates now provides a range of tailored services across Bury, Bolton, and surrounding areas. These include group and one-on-one dog walks, cat and pet drop-ins, puppy visits, transportation, and emergency pet sitting.

Founded in 2016, the Animal Star Awards celebrate the remarkable contributions of animals and the people who work with them. This year’s ceremony will be held in Leeds, where Nathan looks forward to attending.

“I’m so grateful for the trust people place in me to care for their pets. Being recognised is already a win, and I’m also excited for a rare night away in Leeds with my partner for the ceremony,” Nathan said.

In addition to the awards, Nathan is giving back to the community by supporting mental health initiatives. He will be hosting a stall at the Andy’s Man Club Summer Fair on June 29 at Radcliffe FC, raising funds for men’s mental health and connecting with fellow dog lovers.

For Nathan, Rupert’s Mates is more than a business — it’s a journey of healing, connection, and community.
